Insurance Coverage for Losses from Hurricanes

Dickstein Shapiro has developed several resources to assist companies and individuals in understanding the complex insurance coverage issues that come into play when a hurricane or other severe weather strikes. These resources include practical solutions so individuals and businesses can navigate these issues and ensure adequate protection for the future.

The firm has prepared a Q&A: Hurricanes Bring Insurance Issues Along with Destruction to answer pressing questions regarding insurance issues arising in the wake of hurricanes and other natural disasters.

The firm’s guide for companies, entitled “An Overview of Insurance Coverage for Losses from Hurricanes,” offers a comprehensive look at the complex questions, issues, and potential pitfalls faced by businesses and individuals attempting to recover losses from hurricanes and weather disasters.

Firm attorneys have also recently developed an Insurance Coverage Alert, entitled “How Businesses Can Maximize Available Insurance To Pay For Hurricane-Related Losses.” The alert is based on lessons learned as a result of our work with clients rebuilding from the devastating effects of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. This alert is a helpful resource for companies in hurricane-prone regions of the country impacted by this year’s storms or facing future storms.

Dickstein Shapiro also developed a pro bono version of the guide that it distributed to charitable organizations and referral clinics to offer useful information to victims of the 2005 hurricanes as they worked to reestablish their homes and businesses. The guide was featured by the American Bar Association on its website.

In the months following the release of the guide, Kirk Pasich was interviewed by numerous media sources and gave presentations across the country on hurricane-related issues affecting businesses.
