Lori Kalani is a Washington, DC-based partner in Dickstein Shapiro’s State Attorneys General Practice. Her work focuses on helping clients navigate issues at the intersection of state government action, politics, public policy, and the law.
AREAS OF CONCENTRATION
Ms. Kalani has represented public and private companies in a wide range of investigations, public policy, and competition issues before state attorneys general. She assists clients with formulating a strategy for building relationships with, advocating before, and responding to attorneys general. Ms. Kalani’s clients include companies from a variety of industries such as finance, social media, online travel, satellite television, telecommunications, retail, and high technology.
Ms. Kalani is active in attorney general organizations and programs throughout the country, including serving as an advisory board member on the Conference of Western Attorneys General (CWAG) Alliance Partnership, a program involving the Conference of Western Attorneys General, the National Association of Attorneys General, and other public and private entities. Ms. Kalani also helps clients with respect to state legislative strategies. She regularly travels to the states to represent her clients’ interests before state legislative leaders and key policy stakeholders.
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Most recently, Ms. Kalani headed the State Attorneys General Practice at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP. From 2002 through 2009, Ms. Kalani served as the Director of Government Affairs and Senior Corporate Counsel for DISH Network, a leading national pay television provider and Fortune 200 company. She worked directly with state attorneys general, state legislatures, state and federal regulatory agencies, and the U.S. House and Senate on a variety of communications policy, consumer protection, tax, and other legal issues. For example, Ms. Kalani negotiated a multi-state settlement with 46 state attorneys general, on behalf of DISH Network, to settle claims of unfair and deceptive sales practices. She also advised business units on regulatory and privacy matters and in the development of compliance programs. Ms. Kalani also served as the chair of the Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association, the national trade association of the satellite industry and its 32 million consumers. Ms. Kalani worked at the Federal Communications Commission before joining DISH Network.

Ms. Kalani is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Virginia. She is a member of the American Bar Association and the Federal Communications Bar Association.
EDUCATION
Ms. Kalani earned her J.D from George Mason University School of Law (2003). She graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she received her M.B.A. (1994) and her B.S. (1990).
