Curt Clifton joined Dickstein Shapiro in 2008 as a senior legislative advisor to the Public Policy & Law Practice. He served for 12 years on Capitol Hill and was chief of staff to U.S. Representative Albert R. Wynn (D-Md.) from 1999 to 2008. In this capacity, Mr. Clifton was responsible for all legislative activity, communications, and political oversight, and was the lead policy advisor to Representative Wynn on issues before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce.

AREAS OF CONCENTRATION

Mr. Clifton’s areas of focus include federal budget and legislative analysis, appropriations and earmarks, legislative strategy, federal regulatory policy, public relations, crisis communications, grassroots and grasstops messaging, fundraising, political strategy, and coalition building. Mr. Clifton also focuses on issues of jurisdiction to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, including energy, healthcare, telecommunications, interstate and foreign commerce, and biomedical research and development.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Mr. Clifton served in the office of Congressman Albert Wynn beginning in 1996, first as a legislative assistant (1996-1997), then as the director of policy and communications (1997-2002), and most recently as chief of staff (1999-2008). Prior to that, from 1994 to 1995, Mr. Clifton provided campaign and fundraising consulting to several state legislature and congressional candidates in Maryland and Virginia through Clifton Consulting. He also has worked for the Virginia Democratic Party as deputy field director.

EDUCATION

Mr. Clifton received his B.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond (1993).
