Dickstein Shapiro LLP Honored for Two Decades of Community Service to Bread for the City

(Washington, DC)—Dickstein Shapiro LLP is proud to announce that the firm has been presented with an award from Bread for the City, a non-profit organization that provides vulnerable residents of Washington, DC with comprehensive services, including food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services. The award, which recognizes the firm’s two decades of service to Bread for the City, was accepted by Paul R. Taskier, a partner in Dickstein Shapiro’s Antitrust & Financial Services Practice, on November 18 at the launch of the firm’s annual Bread for the City Holiday Helpings campaign, which provides holiday meals for low-income Washington, DC residents.

“Bread for the City is a wonderful organization that on a daily basis touches the lives of those in our community who are most in need,” said Michael Nannes, chairman of Dickstein Shapiro. “Community is central to the fabric of Dickstein Shapiro’s culture and we are very proud to receive this award in recognition of our longstanding partnership.”

The firm began its association with Bread for the City more than 20 years ago by providing pro bono legal services to its legal clinic. The clinic in Bread for the City’s Southeast Center has since been named the “Dickstein Shapiro Legal Clinic.” Dickstein Shapiro attorneys have logged hundreds of hours of pro bono legal services for Bread for the City and its clients, and in 2007, Larry Garr, a partner in the firm’s Corporate & Finance Practice, represented Bread for the City in a case against the IRS and won. In total, the firm has contributed nearly $2 million in financial support to the organization and has expanded its efforts through legal representation of Bread for the City itself, facilitating food, toy, and clothing drives and hosting board meetings and retreats, among other initiatives.

Recognized in part for its work for Bread for the City, as well as its relationship with the Duke Ellington School for the Arts, Dickstein Shapiro was honored last year as Outstanding Corporate Partner of the Year by the Washington, DC Metro Area Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The firm also was recognized in 2008 as the Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year in the large law firm category by the DC Bar Pro Bono Program.
