Washington Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division Celebration of Diversity Award. In June 2009, Dickstein Shapiro received the Washington Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division inaugural Celebration of Diversity Award. This award is presented to a law firm that has demonstrated significant support for young minority lawyers and has made exceptional contributions to enhancing and supporting diversity within the legal community. The award recognizes contributions to diversity in many areas, such as recruitment programs, mentoring efforts, professional development programs, and community-building activities.

Washington Business Journal’s Best Places to Work. In June 2009, Dickstein Shapiro was recognized as one of Washington, DC’s “Best Places to Work” by the Washington Business Journal, marking the fourth year that the Firm received this recognition. Dickstein Shapiro was chosen from hundreds of metro-area nominees based on its collaborative atmosphere, positive work environment, and outstanding benefits. The list is compiled from surveys of hundreds of companies, employees, and recruiters about benefits, professional development, turnover rates, and diversity, among other categories.

Washington Business Journal’s 2009 Philanthropy Awards Finalist. In May 2009, Dickstein Shapiro was selected as a finalist in the Washington Business Journal’s 2009 Philanthropy Awards in the “Community Change and Impact in Philanthropy” category. The award honors the region’s most active and inspirational companies making an impact in their communities through financial and volunteer philanthropic work. Dickstein Shapiro was the only law firm included among the roster of finalists.

The Daily Journal’s Top 100 Women Litigators. In May 2009, Linda Kornfeld was recognized by the Daily Journal as one of the top 100 women litigators in California. The related article, published as a supplement to the Journal, highlights Ms. Kornfeld’s major case wins in 2008 and her pro bono legal assistance to animal-protection advocacy groups.  

MultiCultural Law Magazine’s Top 100 Law Firms for Diversity. In the 2009 edition of MultiCultural Law Magazine, Dickstein Shapiro was named a “Top 100 Law Firm for Diversity” as well as a “Top 100 Law Firm for Women,” a “Top 50 Law Firm for Associates,” and a “Top 25 Law Firm for African-Americans.”

Chambers Global Guide. Dickstein Shapiro was profiled in the 2009 Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business in the Energy: Electricity category. Partners Larry Eisenstat and Mark Perlis were listed as leading attorneys in the guide’s Energy category.

Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. In the 2009 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, which will be released in June, Dickstein Shapiro will be ranked as a leader in the Antitrust, Bankruptcy/Restructuring, Corporate/M&A & Private Equity, Energy: Electricity, Government: Government Relations, Insurance: Policyholder and Dispute Resolution, Intellectual Property, and Litigation practice areas. The VerdictSearch Top 100 Verdicts of 2008. In March 2009, two of the Firm’s 2008 cases appeared on the list of the Top 100 Verdicts of 2008 as compiled by VerdictSearch, an affiliate of The National Law Journal. The intellectual property case Saffran, M.D., Ph.D. v. Boston Scientific Corporation was ranked at number three with a verdict of more than $501 million. The professional negligence insurance coverage case Sempra Energy v. Marsh USA Inc. was ranked at number 41 with a verdict of $48.5 million.

Washington DC Super Lawyers. In March 2009, 11 attorneys from Dickstein Shapiro’s Washington, DC office were named Washington DC Super Lawyers. Recognized attorneys include: Larry Eisenstat, Robert Higgins, Gary Hoffman, Leon Kellner, Deborah Kelly, Mark Kolman, Barry Levine, Daniel Litt, James Murray, Lewis Paper, and Mark Perlis.

IP Law & Business Magazine’s Top 10 Litigation Wins of 2008. The Firm’s Intellectual Property Practice was recognized for its win on behalf of client Dr. Bruce Saffran in Saffran, M.D., Ph.D. v. Boston Scientific Corporation last year. The jury’s award of more than $438 million (plus $69 million in pre-trial interest) is one of the largest ever to be delivered in a patent infringement matter in the United States.

Southern California Super Lawyers. In February 2009, Southern California Super Lawyers recognized Cassandra Franklin, Stephen Goldberg, Linda Kornfeld, and Kirk Pasich in the area of Insurance Coverage, and James Turken in the area of Business Litigation.

The Los Angeles Daily Journal’s Top Plaintiff Verdicts in California. In January 2009, The Los Angeles Daily Journal honored the Firm’s major win for Sempra Energy in Sempra Energy v. Marsh USA Inc. as one of the top plaintiff verdicts of 2008. In this insurance coverage case, attorneys Kirk Pasich and Sandra Smith Thayer secured $48.5 million for their client.

Legal Times Leading Lawyers. In December 2008, the Legal Times named Chuck Ossola, a partner in Dickstein Shapiro’s Intellectual Property Practice, “The Leading Lawyer in Copyright and Trademark” for Washington, DC. He was chosen from among 10 finalists based on independent research and nominations from peers, clients, and other members of the legal industry.

Outstanding Corporate Partner of the Year. In November 2008, Dickstein Shapiro was honored as Outstanding Corporate Partner of the Year by the Washington, DC Metro Area Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The Firm was nominated by its longtime partner, Bread for the City, a non-profit organization that provides vulnerable residents of Washington, DC with food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services. Among previous corporations and foundations that have received this honor, Dickstein Shapiro is the first law firm to be recognized as Outstanding Corporate Partner of the Year. Since 1996, Dickstein Shapiro and its employees have donated more than $1 million to Bread for the City’s legal and food programs, in addition to providing hundreds of hours of pro bono legal services for the organization and its clients.

National Law Journal Plaintiffs’ Hot List. In October 2008, the National Law Journal named the Firm to its annual Plaintiffs’ Hot List, which features “exemplary firms” that have displayed “unusual dedication and creativity” to secure significant victories on behalf of plaintiffs. Specifically the Hot List profiles three noteworthy cases: the antitrust case In re Linerboard Antitrust Litig., the intellectual property case Saffran v. Boston Scientific Corp., and the insurance coverage case Gemstar-TVGuide Int’l Inc. v. National Union Fire Insurance of Pittsburgh.

Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyers. In October 2008, Larry Eisenstat, Gary Hoffman, Stacey Mobley, and Kirk Pasich were named in Lawdragon’s prestigious “500 Leading Lawyers in America” guide. The Lawdragon guide represents the highest standard in the legal profession and features less than one percent of attorneys nationwide.

Profiles in Diversity Journal’s Women Worth Watching. In October 2008, Elaine Metlin was featured in Profiles in Diversity Journal’s annual “Women Worth Watching” issue. The issue recognized an elite group of women leaders from many industries who represent diversity within their spheres of influence, and who are determined and compassionate mentors.

Human Rights Campaign Foundation 2009 Corporate Equality Index. In September 2008, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation named Dickstein Shapiro among the best places to work in the United States for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) professionals. The Firm received a Corporate Equality Index rating of 100 percent.

DC Bar Pro Bono Program’s Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year. In June 2008, Dickstein Shapiro was named the Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year in the large law firm category by the DC Bar Pro Bono Program. The award honors one firm each year for its pro bono program, and this year, Dickstein Shapiro’s Washington, DC office was recognized for its considerable commitment of legal assistance, time, and money to local individuals and organizations in need.

DuPont’s 2007 Challenge Award. In June 2008, Dickstein Shapiro was one of a limited number of law firms to be selected to receive DuPont’s 2007 Challenge Award, a recognition given to primary law firms and service providers that provide DuPont with “extraordinary contributions and accomplishments that have advanced the objectives of the DuPont legal model.” DuPont began the Challenge Awards in 1996, citing firms and providers who, among other things, brought innovation to the legal work provided to DuPont, incorporated technology into the practice of law, and assisted DuPont with its key initiatives, including diversity.

Intellectual Property Law & Business Top 50 Under 45. In May 2008, Brian Siff was named as one of the Top 50 Under 45 in IP Law and Business. According to the publication, the winners “are distinguished by their sheer brainpower, legal smarts, creativity, and hard work.”

Washingtonian’s 800 Top Lawyers. The December issue of Washingtonian magazine listed 800 Top Lawyers, whom the publication calls “Washington’s best—the top one percent.” Six Dickstein Shapiro attorneys representing five practice areas were recognized. The attorneys listed include Paul Bran, G. Michael Green, Barry Wm. Levine, Daniel Litt, Amy Nice, and Scott Thomas.

Washingtonian’s Legends of the Bar. In the December issue of Washingtonian magazine, Sidney Dickstein and Seymour Glanzer were pictured as “Legends of the Bar,” a group of 20 of “Washington’s great firm builders, prosecutors, defenders, litigators, advocates and jurists, all born before President Franklin Roosevelt began his second term.”

Black Enterprise Magazine’s “Hot List.” DeAnna Allen was named to Black Enterprise magazine’s “Hot List,” a “biennial register of professional and entrepreneurial powerhouses under the age of 40 who shape our world,” in the publication’s December 2007 issue.

Washingtonian Magazine Great Places to Work. Washingtonian magazine recognized Dickstein Shapiro in October 2007 as a “Great Place to Work.” The Firm was chosen from more than 225 nominees for its interesting work, good pay and benefits, collegial staff, employee development programs, and flexibility. Significantly, the Firm has been endorsed as a “Great Place to Work” in each biennial edition of the list since its first publication in 1999.
