On a regular basis, more than 100 students, ages 8 to 13, are exposed to a full day in the working world as they participate in the “Bring Your Child to Work Day” Program. Throughout the day, the students are given an insider’s view into the varying roles, tasks, and careers that a large law firm has to offer. The students see first-hand the wide range of work firm attorneys perform through presentations by attorneys from select practices.
Intellectual Property attorneys, for example, exposed the students to patent and trademark issues as they demonstrated how the creators of PEZ Candy ensured that no one could ever copy their unique candy dispensers. During a presentation by Government Contracts Practice attorneys, the students competed to see who could design the most unique products to offer to the most discerning of customers, the United States Government. The Marketing Department has immersed students into the art of marketing and advertising through a discussion on the role that brands and logos play in defining a business firm’s image. The students took part in a logo design competition, in which they designed a logo for the firm that was judged by the Marketing staff and winners from each age group have been awarded prizes at the end of the day. A scavenger hunt orchestrated by the Library staff challenged the students’ research skills. The students also experienced the job-hunting process as they participated in mock-interviews and created business cards with Human Resources. A capstone event, complete with gift bags and awards, completes the day.
