Women's Leadership Initiative - Lead

Dickstein Shapiro is a leader in the support and advancement of women in the legal marketplace. In 1981, we hired our first woman partner, and today, 33 percent of our attorneys and 18 percent of our partnership are women. We have had great success in attracting, retaining, and advancing female attorneys. Work-life balance is a top priority for the firm, and our diversity, professional development, and quality of life committees have a mission to foster an office environment that is consistently employee and family friendly. “Dickstein’s Quest for Family Values” was the subject of a 1999 article in the Legal Times, a Washington, DC-based legal publication, and the firm has been called upon to address the District of Columbia Bar Association regarding its initiatives. Chairman Michael Nannes has been a longtime supporter of women’s issues. In 2002, the firm was awarded the American Bar Association’s National Association of Women Lawyers President’s Award for a “strong record of support for the advancement of women in the law.” In 2006, Mr. Nannes was named a Women’s Bar Association “Star of the Bar,” an award that recognizes members of the Washington, DC legal community who have “made a difference in the professional lives of women attorneys by encouraging their advancement and retention.” Mr. Nannes is a member of the Advisory Council of the Project for Attorney Retention (PAR), which works to stem unwanted attrition among attorneys by promoting work-life balance and the advancement of women in the legal profession.
