Women's Leadership Initiative

Dickstein Shapiro is committed to developing and promoting women attorneys at all levels of the firm. We work to foster an environment that is consistently employee- and family-friendly and maintain focused efforts to attract the most talented women attorneys. In 2005, the Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) was created to develop and promote women attorneys at all levels of the firm as business generators and leaders.

Our dedication to the advancement of women in the legal profession has been recognized throughout the industry, and we have come a long way since hiring our first female partner in 1981. For example:
  • The deputy general counsel, two members of the Executive Committee, and four of our five chief officers are women;
  • In the 2010 edition of MultiCultural Law Magazine, Dickstein Shapiro was named a “Top 100 Law Firm for Women,” as well as a “Top 100 Law Firm for Diversity,” and a “Top 25 Law Firm for Native Americans”;
  • In 2009, Dickstein Shapiro topped the Project for Attorney Retention survey with 67 percent of its new partner promotions going to women in the firm; and
  • In 2006, Chairman Michael Nannes received the Women’s Bar Association of the District of Columbia’s “Star of the Bar” award for improving the professional lives of women attorneys by encouraging their development and retention.

The firm is a leader in supporting the advancement of women and continues to be at the forefront of women’s leadership issues by providing our attorneys with opportunities to LEAD, LEARN, and CONNECT.

We provide women attorneys with the opportunity to LEAD by supporting organizations dedicated to the advancement of women and by creating internal policies that set the standard for the legal industry.

We provide women attorneys with the opportunity to LEARN by partnering with membership organizations that work to build inclusive workplaces and expand opportunities for women in business.

We provide women attorneys with opportunities to CONNECT through business and social networking events and by hosting legal industry educational events.
